The Kalce stone portal

An exceptional project was created in the workshop of the Sežana College of Materials Design (VSOM): the Kalce stone entrance portal, which is incorporated into a new house modeled after traditional Notranjska-style homes. This is a rare example of a modern new construction incorporating a massive entrance portal made of Karst limestone, representing a significant contribution to the preservation and reinterpretation of the Slovenian cultural landscape.

Stone, Architecture, and the Story of Space

The project client, Srečko Brus, invited the dean of VSOM, Anton Marn, a local architect and expert on the cultural landscape, to assist with the planning of the portal. On behalf of VSOM Sežana, he prepared the project concept, thereby laying the groundwork for collaboration between experts and students.

The following also contributed to the implementation:

Both artists carved numerous details that have imbued the portal with timeless elegance and local character.

The Kalce Stone Portal: A Bridge Between the Past and the Future

The Kalce stone portal project demonstrates that it is possible to combine contemporary needs with artisanal heritage. Massive Karst limestone is not merely a building material, but also an expression of respect for the space, tradition, and natural resources. Such projects represent the essence of the VSOM curriculum—design that transcends aesthetics and has a strong cultural, spatial, and sustainable impact. The portal is now fully erected, and the project will be completed with the installation of wooden door panels, which will round out the entire story.
