The Material Design at the Sežana College of Material Design (VSOM) is designed for individuals who want to create, explore, and bring their ideas to life. It is designed for future designers, creators, craftspeople, technically-oriented students, and anyone interested in combining creativity, materials, technology, and entrepreneurship. We offer two tracks—Stone Design and 3D Design—between which you choose after completing your first year.

At VSOM, we don’t just train designers. We train solution creators—people who know how to develop an idea, turn it into a product, and present it to the world.

More Than Just Design

The modern world needs people who know how to integrate different areas of expertise. Today, successful products are not the result of creativity or technical knowledge alone, but emerge at the intersection of design, materials, technology, sustainability, and an understanding of user needs.

That is precisely why the program at VSOM integrates fields that are often separated elsewhere. Students gain knowledge in the fields of design, materials, product development, visual communications, art history, digital technologies, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development. In doing so, they develop not only specialized knowledge in each individual field but, above all, the ability to integrate these fields into comprehensive and practical solutions.

It is precisely this interdisciplinary approach that sets VSOM graduates apart. In addition to creative thinking, they develop an understanding of materials, gain practical experience in product manufacturing, become familiar with modern digital tools, and master the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and project development. This combination of competencies gives them a broader perspective on the creative process and greater adaptability in a rapidly changing environment.

The program encourages independent thinking, research, experimentation, and the search for innovative solutions. Students learn how to develop an idea, test it in practice, build a prototype, improve the product, and present it to users, clients, or the market.

You learn by doing, not just by listening

At VSOM, theory is not separate from practice—it is its foundation. The program is based on project work, workshops, material research, and hands-on training in a real-world work environment.

As part of your studies, you’ll complete more than 800 hours of practical training at companies, with artisans, craftspeople, and other organizations. This allows you to gain experience, familiarize yourself with the work environment, and build your professional network even while you’re still a student.

Students participate in projects that blend design, heritage, sustainability, and the contemporary needs of society. You can find more examples of this type of work among reference projects.

Collaborations with artisans, craftspeople, companies, cultural institutions, and other organizations are an important part of the program. This allows students to engage with real-world projects, clients, and practical challenges while still in school.

A particular strength of the program is its location in the Karst region, where a rich heritage of craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, creativity, and the region’s development potential intertwine.

In collaboration with INKUBATOR d.o.o. Sežana, students have the opportunity to participate in additional training in the areas of entrepreneurship, business idea development, marketing, project management, self-employment, and successful entry into the job market.
