The renovation of the staircase at Štanjel has brought this architectural gem back into the spotlight after decades of neglect. The Baroque staircase at Štanjel Castle, one of the finest examples of stone heritage in the Karst region, was revitalized in its renovated form in 2022.
Renovation with a vision and respect for tradition
The project was initiated by the Municipality of Komen, and the renovation was carried out in collaboration with the Sežana Incubator and the Sežana Education and Development Center. Professors and students from VSOM Sežana – the Sežana College of Materials Design – participated in the project.
More than 3,400 hours of meticulous craftsmanship
During the restoration, 89 new stone elements were crafted, and 21 originals were restored. All pieces were hand-carved using methods employed by master craftsmen over 150 years ago. This was also an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience and knowledge about cultural heritage in the school workshop. The restoration of the Štanjel staircase is thus not just a construction project, but also an educational story about the transfer of knowledge and craftsmanship techniques.
Why visit the renovated staircase in Štanjel?
Today, the renovated staircase is one of the most beautiful features of the castle courtyard in Štanjel, where history, knowledge, and aesthetics come together. Combined with Ferrari’s Garden and the town’s architectural ensemble, it creates a unique experience.
